Little known fact...only Republican's have Common Sense

Ok Cristin...before never speaking to me again...read on. I'm not really saying I believe that (although I've often felt that way many times :) ), but read on...

So today (January 24, 2008), the details of the 'Tax Relief' plan that was passed by Congress were announced. Read it here if you care.

http://www.startribune.com/business/14178126.html

Now, that's great and all. Now let's go back to logic class and see if I can remember how things work. So here's a few 'familiar looking' logic test questions (true or false of course)

1. Everyone who pays income, works. Therefor, everyone who works, pays income tax. Easy...FALSE. As stated in the article and most people know, if you don't make enough, you don't pay taxes.

2. Rebates are an amount of money given back to you for something that you paid for. Therefor, you must pay for something in order to get a rebate. Easy again...TRUE.

But wait! According to our lawmakers, we can give someone a $300 INCOME TAX rebate, even if they didn't pay any income tax! Ok...so that's fine. But the article states:

"Conservative Republicans, meanwhile, were likely to be restless over tax rebates going to those without income tax liability."

Ok...so logically it would make sense that you would have some sort of liability in order to get something back. But apparently only conservative Republican's are capable of grasping that concept? I would hope that MOST AMERICAN's, regardless of political affiliation, would be smart enough and logical enough to feel restless about that.

There Jim, how's that for keeping it short, stupid? And I appologize to any democrats, republicans, independants, greens, communists, nazis, etc. that may have been offended by this. I understand that COMMON SENSE (not republicans) can sometimes make it seem like people should be accountable and responsible for themselves. It's unfortunate.

Good posting Steve! I agree totally.

Then again, I agree with you on not giving money to millions of people who really don't want to do jack to get it.

It is true...republicans might be the only ones with common sense.

Don't worry Steve, I am slowly converting Cristin over to the dark side. Soon a republican she will be. (Imagine that in my best Yoda voice)

Do you think that this tax relief plan will truly help? I think it is a nice short term fix (and I am not going to complain about $1,200 in my pocket), but our deficit is already spinning out of control and adding an additional $150B, is not going to help any.

I realize that most people will take these checks and put them right back into the economy by spending them on ghetto toys like trampolines, alcohol, and cigarettes, but I honestly don’t see how this can help long term. It is my understanding that they expect this to create new jobs and improve consumer spending. Yes we will spend the money, but how is this extra spending going to create that many new jobs? I think it will be a surge in spending much like around the holidays, after Christmas people go back to their normal spending. So it will create more "seasonal jobs", whoppie! Am I way off?

The thing I am most sick of during this entire thing is seeing Nancy Pelosi on the tv talking about bipartisan agreement on this plan. If it wasn’t an election year, there is no way the Democrats would be okay with this plan, especially cutting out the increase to unemployment benefits.

I do, however, think the tax relief plans for capital expenditures in businesses is a positive. This will help the many struggling companies I deal with. They can write off 50% of those expenses and spend money else where.

Well I better get to work, nice blog though Steve, very political! Can we stick to movie quotes and making fun of Jim from now on? I don't like to think at work....

Yeah, either way it's all just a temporary break in taxes that we will have to pay back in the next year or two.

It's nice to have such a huge deficit so when we want to just 'create' 150 billion dollars, that amount seems like a drop in the bucket, so why not!

Rediculous.
